Ellis Island, Gateway to the American Dream

Ellis Island, Gateway to the American Dream
by Pamela Reeves
134 pages + Appendix and Index

The book traces the history of Ellis Island starting h its establishment as remedy to problems at Castle Garden, a state-run immigration center. In addition to the establishment and later changes to Ellis Island, much of the book describes the experiences of immigrants. There are photos or drawings on every page , including all but the final page of the timeline at the end of the book. An appendix lists the number of immigrants arriving in the U.S. 1982-1954, and how many of those entered through New York. Another appendix contains a short list of major resources for readers who wish to trace their ancestry. The three-page index may be useful, though information is easy to find within the pages of the book.
